President Bola Tinubu on Monday officially swore in newly appointed National Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) alongside members of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), signaling a robust push towards critical institutional reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja just before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting. Among those inaugurated were Mallam Tukur Abdulrazaq Yusuf, representing the North West, and Professor Sunday Nwambam Aja from Ebonyi State in the South East, both appointed as INEC Commissioners.
Additionally, two new members were inducted into the Code of Conduct Bureau: Ikpeme Kenneth Ndem from Cross River State and retired Justice Buba Ibrahim Nyaure of Taraba State.
Following the ceremony, INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu addressed reporters, emphasizing the Commission’s ongoing commitment to electoral reforms. He revealed that INEC is actively collaborating with the National Assembly on a comprehensive suite of proposed changes aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral framework.
“We have undertaken an extensive internal review and engaged with various stakeholders to identify areas for improvement,” Yakubu stated. “As a result, we submitted 142 recommendations to the National Assembly. Among these, eight key proposals necessitate amendments to the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act.”
Professor Yakubu expressed optimism about the progress of discussions with lawmakers, describing them as “very encouraging.” These reforms are informed by lessons learned from the 2023 general elections, which highlighted areas where institutional adjustments could enhance transparency, efficiency, and public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
The appointments and ongoing reform initiatives come as the Tinubu administration intensifies efforts to ensure credible, free, and fair elections in 2027. The new commissioners and CCB members are expected to play vital roles in driving these institutional changes and strengthening the governance framework that underpins Nigeria’s democratic processes.
As the country gears up for the next electoral cycle, the government’s focus on reform signals a commitment to addressing past challenges and fostering a more resilient electoral system that reflects the will of the Nigerian people.
